Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is held annually from August 1-August 7th. It was started in 1992 and is an initiative which promotes the many benefits of breastfeeding for babies as well as mothers. WBW is celebrated in 120 countries and is supported by the WHO, UNICEF, many local health related authorities and organizations. This year's theme is: "Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all".

Our local WBW host and breastfeeding authority is Materna Prenatal and Lactation Services and their mission is “Empowering Through Education: Providing comprehensive breastfeeding support to every member of our community". They are excited to host this global event for the third consecutive year.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All.”

Aligned with the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) objectives, their campaign aims to:

- Inform people about the importance of breastfeeding.

- Anchor breastfeeding support as a vital part of maternal and child health.

- Engage with individuals and organizations for greater impact.

- Galvanize action on breastfeeding support and promotion.

A series of enriching activities and informative sessions have been organized across multiple locations and are in collaboration with different organizations, including Empower Wellness, Corpus Christi Birth Center, South Texas Pelvic Health, Kennedy Dental Care and Iglesia Bautista Southside, where a session will be held in Spanish. These events are designed to benefit expecting and nursing mothers, fathers, partners, friends, family members, and the entire community. They are also inviting providers of maternal and pediatric health services to participate and share their expertise.

#WBW2024 will focus on survival, health, and wellbeing. It will showcase the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society, with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crises. The theme is aligned with thematic area 2 of the WBW-SDG 2030 campaign.
