prioritize breastfeeding: create sustainable support systems

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is held annually from August 1-August 7th. It was started in 1992 and is an initiative which promotes the many benefits of breastfeeding for babies as well as mothers. WBW is celebrated in 120 countries and is supported by the WHO, UNICEF, many local health related authorities and organizations. This year's theme is: "Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all".

Our local WBW host and breastfeeding authority is Materna Prenatal and Lactation Services and their mission is “Empowering Through Education: Providing comprehensive breastfeeding support to every member of our community". They are excited to host this global event for the fourth consecutive year.

This World Breastfeeding Week, the spotlight is back on the environment and climate change. The campaign underscores the importance of prioritising breastfeeding by building robust and sustainable support systems. A supportive environment for breastfeeding not only benefits families but also significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with artificial feeding. WBW2025 aims to connect actors across all levels involved in breastfeeding support to create resilient and sustainable support systems. WABA will also highlight the World Health Assembly (WHA) 2025 Nutrition Targets.
